Housekeeping Tipping Etiquette
Hiring a housekeeping service can be a great solution to a busy lifestyle. More and more of your neighbors are saving time to enjoy it how they see fit by working with individual cleaners or cleaning services. One of the frequent questions that come up with this type of growing service industry is whether there is any type of tipping etiquette for housekeeping. While there is no generally preset requirement for most professional companies there are a few things you may want to keep in mind when deciding whether you want to tip or not. Ultimately, at the end of the day, the decision to tip is yours.
When Should You Tip?
Most companies and individuals do not require tipping, nor do they expect it. If you have hired a professional business and chose not to tip you shouldn’t expect to see any difference in the quality of the work you receive.
If you do choose to tip, when you tip and how much can really depend on a number of items. You want to consider a few things such as the frequency of your clean, the type of service, and the performance of your cleaner.
If you are hiring a house cleaner for a one-time service you can skip a tip all together or offer a one-time tip. If you have a year-round or recurring service it’s not really necessary to tip every time the cleaners come to your home. Instead, you could choose to tip a small amount every few months or a larger amount once a year.
Also, consider the condition of your home. Professional cleaning is a lot more physical work than many expect. If your home hasn’t been maintained in quite some time you might want to think about the amount of effort your cleaner has put into your service.
How Mow Do You Tip?
You’re always welcome to tip as much or as little as you’re comfortable with. Your cleaner isn’t expecting anything. If you want to show you appreciation some way, they will be satisfied whether it’s monetary or a simple thank you.
If you want a general rule of thumb you can follow the same etiquette standards as similar services industries (15%-20%). For recurring cleaning services tips between $10 and $20 are always a good range. If you regularly have more than one cleaner it acceptable to split the total tip between them.
Do I Tip in Cash?
Some clients feel most comfortable tipping their cleaners in cash because they know that the money is going directly to the individuals responsible for their service. Other businesses welcome tipping in gift cards, or simply adding gratuity onto the bill for service charge.
