Considering we’re from the Pacific Northwest, being green actually means something to us. If you’re looking for a company with a conscience but can also deliver results without putting your family or the environment at risk then contact us today.
What Are Eco-Friendly Products?
Eco-friendly products use natural ingredients to deliver the same cleaning results as traditional cleaners without the harsh side effects from the chemicals they use. These harsh chemicals have been proven to have serious detrimental side effects for people exposed to them in homes, particularly children. These same products have also been proven to negatively impact the environment when they are carelessly flushed down the drain and directly into our water systems. This has immediate and ling-term consequences on your family’s health and also the precious eco-systems in our natural environment.
The purpose of this post is to cover some of the Pros and Cons of Green Cleaning products and what some of the ingredients to use instead. In terms of green cleaners, we mainly use all-purpose cleaners for everything. We currently use the Airbiotic’s brand all-purpose concentrated cleaner. It’s essentially like a probiotic for digestion but for your house. Regular cleaners don’t keep bacteria from coming back, but probiotic cleaners use “good bacteria” that are supposed to keep working 3-5 days after use to keep germs from returning to surfaces. Bon Ami is another specialty product we prefer for specific areas of the home and is like the “green” version of Comet. Method mop solution and wood cleaners, and Howard Natural Stainless Steel Cleaner. There are many other green cleaning products available which we’ll be covering below.
Not Eco-Friendly Cleaning Ingredients
There are many hazardous chemicals still being used every day but fortunately, people are becoming more educated and concerned about our environment and their individual impacts. Many chemicals are serious lung and skin irritants and we will list some of the examples below. A good rule to follow is if you can’t even pronounce the ingredient, chances are it’s a toxic artificially created chemical.
- Nonylphenol Ethoxylate
- Hydrochloric acid
- Paradichlorobenzenes (PDCBs)
- Phosphoric acid
- Sulphuric acid
- Trichloroethylene (TCE)
- Hydrochloric Acid
Some of those sound pretty scary right? That’s because they are.
Eco-Friendly Cleaning Ingredients
With the growing public awareness of the negative effects of the chemicals we put in our bodies, use in our home, and release into the environment, the options and availability of greener cleaning solutions are growing. Some of these Eco-friendly cleaning ingredients may come as a surprise to some but many have been available since forever.
- Baking Soda
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Sodium Chloride
- Essential Oils
“Downside” To Eco-Friendly Products
Due to the harsh nature of contemporary cleaning products, using green alternatives typically requires a little more muscle to get the job done. Another downside to using (some) green products are that they come at a higher price point than the mass-produced cheap chemicals corporations have been pushing on us for decades. One product which can’t really be matched naturally is Chlorine, but isn’t usually a necessary ingredient for most cleaning situations anyways.
Upside To Eco-Friendly Products
One of the many benefits of green cleaning is that eco-friendly products won’t damage surfaces or melt your skin off. These natural ingredients are also better for the environment and typically break down very easy with little to no negative impacts on our planet. If you or say a child accidentally comes in contact with your skin or eyes you’re less exposed to the kind of toxins that can cause chemical burns, asthmatic reactions or even unconsciousness.
Some other Benefits of Natural Cleaning Products
Knowing more about the origins and specifics of a product labeled green is also important as you may be unaware of some of the other dangers involved when using industrial household cleaning chemicals.
- Reduced environmental impact
- No carcinogens
- No human or aquatic toxins
- No reproductive toxins
- Non-corrosive to eyes or skin
- Low volatile organic content
Due to the risks associated with traditional cleaning ingredients and products Green cleaning services are becoming more popular. Consumers are becoming more educated and concerned about the potential health risks and environmental impacts of the chemicals they use or what they prefer their cleaners to use in their homes. If you’re interested in maintaining a safe indoor environment for your family then you should be considering switching to eco-friendly cleaning practices and products. Continuing to use hardcore cleaning chemicals can lead to illnesses ranging from a mild headache or even cancer. Make the switch today by picking up some natural cleaning ingredients or giving a green maid service like us a call.
